  Organizing Your Demos
Posted by: {DO}Rigel - 07-14-2012, 03:48 PM - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (2)

I just found something that I wanted to share. I have a few demos piling up and I wanted to organize them. The problem is, if you move a demo into a subdirectory of the demo directory, then how do you play it? Well, you can and here's how Idea

Here is how you play a normal demo (at the console enter):

map DemoNameHere.dm2

Now lets create a subdirectory in your demo directory named "Duels". If you want to play a demo in that folder this is how you do it (at the console enter):

map /Duels/DemoNameHere.dm2

Now you can create subdirectories to catagorize your demos and still be able to play them when you like Big Grin

Happy fraggin'! Cool

The Top Ten Reasons Your Wife Should Love AA
Posted by: Xulb - 07-14-2012, 12:00 PM - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (8)

Some of us old farts are having difficultly justifying our AA devotion to the trouble and strife. Therefore, as a much-needed public service, let me suggest.....

The Top Ten Reasons Your Wife Should Love AA

10. You can't play AA and be round the pub.

- "It's so nice having you drunk at home for a change."

9. You will improve your mind with stimulating conversation.

<[hoax]horse> if i take too much of it
<stirky> random ping pong?
<Drastic> waterless pool diving?
<xEMPERORx> just read it again
<Drastic> lmao
<stirky> horseless polo
<xEMPERORx> lol
<Drastic> lmao
<[hoax]horse> i get rid of those i know it
<Drastic> omg horseless polo roflmaooo
<[hoax]horse> my body is just straightening
<xEMPERORx> and open
<xEMPERORx> haha
<[SiN]Misfit> wtf

8. AA improves digital dexterity.

- 'Nuff said.

7. AA provides wholesome entertainment for the kids.

- "Look Dad, Granpa's on a killing spree!"

6. Playing AA improves your understanding of today's youth.

- wtf? LMAO!

5. Your wife will receive more presents.

- "If I buy her this necklace, I know she'll let me get that 1250W power supply."

4. Your pillow talk will improve.

- "You were the hunter, dear, but now you are the hunted!"

3. You will lengthen your CV.

- B.Sc., University of Hull, 1983
- Panhandler, 1984-2010
- Joined Clan SiNister, 2011
- First place, Saturday Insta Tourney, 2012

2. You will improve your reputation among your peers.

"Awesome servers, Xulb! Now upgrade, dammit."

And the Number One reason why your wife should love AA:

1. JuicyGibs will never give you her number.

- She'll just frag your sorry middle-aged butt.

  Shootmania Storm.
Posted by: DeathRay - 07-14-2012, 11:28 AM - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (3)

As a lead developer, one of my jobs is to check out the competition, especially new stuff that is coming out.

So I signed up for the Shootmania beta, and have played it the last day or so.

This game has been getting massive hype(read, huge amount of paid Astroturfing), so I thought it was worth seeing what all the fuss was about.

Impressions:

1. Renderer is good, but the graphics are a little on the monotonous and drab side. Each of the levels I have seen have pretty much the same decor and coloring. They also appear to almost look procedurally generated, and very symetrical in most cases. Most seem like open areas, with little complexity vertically, other than some hills and walls. I took some screens, to show what it does. Interestingly, I bet I could make smaller versions of levels like that with CRX that look very similar, though the terrain parts wouldn't look as good(we do need to add ASE support if we want properly blended terrains).

Player models are kinda lame...they remind me of Xonotic in a way. Uninspired meshes with brightskins and no shading. They look cleaner and better than Xonotic though. Our Tron skins are better Big Grin

2. Menu is confusing as hell. Took me quite a while to figure out how to join a server. But, I do like it's cleanliness and simplicity. It looks nice to the eye.

3. Gameplay is pretty fast and cool. I had a lot of fun playing. I don't know if "Storm" is a game mode, or what, but it was kind of like projectile insta. Only one weapon, though I heard someone speak of getting a lightning gun somewhere.

Overall pretty cool, but they have got to have more variety and complexity in the level design for it to really appeal to me. Others might find it's simplicity and banality intriguing. The movement is a little exaggerated, but suits the level design well. The ESports crowd will probably like it, but mostly because they've been told they should.

  AMD drivers under Linux
Posted by: oniichan - 07-12-2012, 08:50 AM - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (6)

Hi.
I recently installed my AMD drivers, (the opensource ones wouldn't install at all) and I am having some problems with mu dual-monitor setup.

I have 2 monitors and CCC doesn't place them correctly. In reality,
monitor 1 is to the right and monitor 2 is to the left. They are not
placed in this manner software-wise.
I am running this on Fedora 17 (latest) and I have an AMD HD 6850 graphics card.
Does anyone know how to change this?

  A LITTLE SCARY
Posted by: :ac:[SiN]METALHEAD - 07-12-2012, 02:18 AM - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (35)

Here it is 10:10p.m. Pacific time and I see NO ONE playing in the servers...A little scary to say the least...I know there are all kind reasons why this is..
But it seems to me the less players I see, I might not have an AA to go to..I know if I was new and saw 0 players, I would think this game no longer exists
and I would go find another game to play where there were ppl...Maybe I'm in the wrong thread but I remember when I started here, this place was packed
at this exact time frame and actually was a little intimidating Confused ...Just my 2 cent observation... Dodgy

  Wow! Q3 Demo - Movement
Posted by: {DO}Rigel - 07-10-2012, 06:06 PM - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (3)

This is fairly impressive: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mAUT3KDA5ik

I wonder how much of this can be done in Alien Arena. My guess is that there is a lot that's possible that we just haven't reached yet.

  I need some help here!!!
Posted by: cazazo - 07-08-2012, 10:32 AM - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (6)

Hi all, I had so much problems with AA under Linux, that I decided to install W7 professional version to give it a try and see if the game runs better than under Linux.
Well, seems that I'm a bit out of luck!
System wise my 8 buttons mouse (Logitech G500 - installed with the Logitech drivers and all) is working fine, but when comes to the AA, the mouse is working with only 3 buttons! All the other programs works just fine!
Any advices on that one???
I'm now having problems with the game for around 5 months! Stated under linux, now going to W7. Confused
