Generation 3

RE: Generation 3
Working on animating the Alien Force spider mech. Lot of work, but it's getting there, rigging that sucker took some effort!

Gonna spend a little more time on these powerups, including one for haste and sproing, and then back to working on the variable server rate code and general cleanup and tying up loose ends(like map glitches, tweaks, bot paths, etc). Basically quite a bit of stuff yet, but still eyeing Spring 2017 for a release and probably Steam Greenlight campaign.

RE: Generation 3
Animated the powerup models for AForce and DDamage.

Working on the variable server rate code, and this time around it's much easier thanks to some changes Max made. There are a few glitches but pretty much I have everything working at a test rate of 40fps server frames(old was 10fps). This change will be very significant, and should vastly improve pretty much every aspect of online(and offline) playing.

RE: Generation 3
Variable server rate code is very near completion, and I'll check it in within a day or two.

This will be a major improvement for smoothness of game play online. Every aspect of the game should feel smoother and more accurate, especially with anti-lag.

Currently AA runs at a server frame rate of 10fps. We will allow between 10fps and 120fps, with a default of 60fps. This is similar to what UT4 is doing, and other similar, modern games run. Now, the thing is, server frame rates WILL have a bearing on your server's connection speed. If you cannot handle much, you need to run a lower frame rate(though most should handle the default of 60). Running 120 should only be on high speed connections only.

RE: Generation 3
Banfire has update his passworded Gen 3 servers to use the new variable server tickrate code. At the moment, we are testing with a tickrate of 40fps, which is comparable to what many modern games default to. It can be set as high as 120fps, but do so at your own peril(and the peril of Banfire's network!).

There are only a couple of unfinished items, in fact only 1 that I am aware of(the spiderbots's ai - it works currently but isn't smooth yet). Everything else should be working.

So, what should you expect? At 40fps, vs the old tickrate of 10fps, the game should feel more responsive, and more accurate. Antilag should be 4x more precise, and everything should be 4x more precise. It should feel smoother, and you should be able to do tricks like rocket jumping, etc, much more easily than before. Overall it should feel much less frustrating that running at 10fps.

RE: Generation 3
Is the tick rate server side configurable and the client uses the server's settings?

Correct, it's set using sv_tickrate on the server, and the client reads that information from the server to set it's timing so that effects look correct.

RE: Generation 3
Martians get a slight update to the head. Something I've wanted to do for a year or two actually. Gave them throats, brighter teeth, a tongue, and reshaped the head slightly - a bit wider and better rounding on the edges. Now it's a bit less "Mars Attacks" and a bit more reptilian in nature, and more original. I will update the warrior with the new head next week.

RE: Generation 3
This is a nice touch, good work John Big Grin Do you want the playerpose directory added to the unix build?

But what if the law of diminishing returns begins to apply less and less?

Thanks Big Grin

Nope, that should not be included in any builds.
