RE: SVN on Windows
I got it to compile on Win 8 with Visual Studio Express 2012. Works great!
Here's my tips...
Follow the above instructions for Visual Studio Express 2010 (including naming the directory vs2010 that you're instructed to), but also:
A) Use the "Visual Studio Express 2012 for Windows Desktop" (there's another version of VS called "For Windows 8", it doesn't work for AA).. and (as of now) you have to upgrade VS after installation.
B) Don't use any spaces in the directory name containing AA (this had me confused for a good hour).
C) Install the Windows 8 SDK (for some reason, this seemed to help, even though it should be installed anyway).
D) For OpenAL - The "real" openal files from creative labs seem to be unavailable currently. So,
First, use the oalinst.exe that's included with the AA svn.. That seems to install the DLL's. However, I couldn't find the .h header files (if oalinst.exe installs them anywhere).. so pull the header files out of openal-soft-1.15.1-bin.zip from here:
http://kcat.strangesoft.net/openal.html
E) You have to add the directories for where the openal header files (which is whatever directory you unzipped that openal file above in) and ogg header files (which is C:\alien-arena-svn\vs2010\libsrc\libogg-1.2.0\include for me, replace c:\alien-arena-svn\ to your specs) to many of the projects in order to get them to compile like this:
Inside VS2012, right click on "crx", "libvorbis", etc (those are the project names), select "Properties" at the bottom and add the location of the include files to Configuration Directories -> VC++ Directories -> Include Directories. For mine, the added directories were:
C:\alien-arena-svn\vs2010\libsrc\ode-0.11.1\include (note, you don't put the final ogg directory in here because the source code includes "ogg\ogg.h" not "ogg.h")
C:\openal-soft-1.15.1-bin\include\AL (wherever you unzipped that openAL zip file)
You can see what projects need this when you try to build (they'll complain about missing al.h and ogg.h, and you can see the project name somewhere in the build output at the bottom).

Hope that helps!

RE: SVN on Windows
@Metalhead, I don't know. Spion's instructions are for compiling the game on Windows. I don't know if the Irritant's pre-built Windows binaries work on Windows 8, we haven't had any success stories or bug reports yet that I know of. I'm going to assume that if you don't care about compiling the game yourself, the instructions in the original post should still be good.

RE: SVN on Windows
You can run the normal binaries on windows 8 as you could on 7.

I was trying to make the console window only display "tells", not the other junk.

Any of you know any tricks to doing that?

Metalhead, that's your answer.

The console window shows anything that has been printed with Com_Printf, in qcommon/common.c. Chat messages are Com_Printf'd on the client side in CL_ParseServerMessage, in cl_parse.c. You might create a separate variant of Com_Printf that does print to the console window, and then remove that functionality from the original Com_Printf.

Thanks, changing Com_Printf worked well enough.

I just Changed:

Quote:#if defined WIN32_VARIANT
// Also echo to dedicated console
Sys_Print(msg);
#endif
To this:
Quote:#if defined WIN32_VARIANT
// Also echo to dedicated console
// Spion hack, only echo tells (which contain ': ') to dedicated console
if(strstr(msg,": ") != NULL) {

Sys_Print(msg);
Sys_Print("\n");
}
// End Spion Hack
#endif

RE: SVN on Windows
SVN somehow does not work for me.

[Image: j72uGAN.jpg]

Details: It did not work a month ago. Now I have reformatted my pc, installed Win7 64bit and SVN 64bit so I tried it again - still no success. The directory name was "AAcool" since people said that it might be a problem to use a directory name which was used before, still not working.
