IRC in an iframe

IRC in an iframe
I'd like to be able to provide access to IRC from my clan site in an iframe. Similar to what they are doing here: http://occupywallst.org/chat/

This client, QwebIRC, is made by QuakeNet and would be my first choice for AA. All we have to do is install the backend: http://qwebirc.org/installation

Here is what the iframe code would look like:
Code:
<iframe
src="http://irc.planetarena.org/?channels=alienarena&uio=Mj10cnVlJjk9dHJ1ZSYxMT0xNzQab"
width="647" height="400"></iframe>

Try QWebIRC on our old channel on EFNet for a test drive (#alienarena): http://chat.efnet.org:9090/

QWebIRC works on freenode and a boatload of others have the backend already installed: http://qwebirc.org/about

There is a very similar alternative which only requires a flash daemon to be installed: http://www.lightirc.com/iframe.html

Imagine being able to get people into IRC right off AA's website? For example you could say go here: http://red.planetarena.org/chat.html (sample only will get 404)

RE: IRC in an iframe
rather than installing flash backends, etc. why not just put up a mibbit link on the website, like Mischief set up. We have already configured IRC to work with mibbit in the manner that we want. Here is his thread - http://red.planetarena.org/forum/showthread.php?tid=375 you can look at the source in your browser to see how he set it up? Looks like he is using an I frame that works just fine with our servers.

RE: IRC in an iframe
Its just kind of ugly, that's all. Its dark and doesn't look right on some PC's I tried. It uses only half the page and doesn't scale right for mobile users, and you have to live with ads for other games, and other junk.

Here is one that also uses Mibbit, is more visible coloring, fills the whole page, and scales better for mobile users: TryMe

These are both great to have, and I'm super happy to have them. However, QWebIRC in an iframe would be a big step up in my opinion.
  • Attract more players to IRC
  • Looks integrated (not offsite/redirected/3rd Party)
  • Very thin, low resources
  • No advertisements
  • Scales well for mobile use
  • Looks as good as the page the iframe is on
  • Developed for Quike and makes sense for Alien Arena
I made a quick working sample to show you (forgive my shabby skills). This connects to freenode #alienarena: AAWebChat

If a person lands on our site and join's chat because its easy, then we have a better chance of a new friend/player/contributor to our game. Also, if a current player lands on a clan site and happens to join IRC - all bonus there too. Finally, it makes IRC Super Easy, and doesn't feel like your in the wrong place - its on our site.

Here is what I see:

The add cycles through many different ads.

Below is what it might look like with my suggestion (someone with more skill could move the iframe higher):

RE: IRC in an iframe
i will see if i can get a hold of mischief and ask him to change/fix the
mibbit client.
seems to me the easiest and best way.

His implementation isn't broken, that's because Mibbit forces the ads.

I have learned more... I have found a way to use the Mibbit client in an iframe the way I wanted, so all is good. I will keep working on this and maybe post again later Wink

Edit:
Below is a screen shot of the working copy here: http://ducesoforion.com/aa_irc.html

Next I will try to set better colors for the client (inside the iframe)
